Judith Gurley Plastic Surgery

Award of Merit: Interior Design/Fitout

The goals for Judith Gurley Plastic Surgery in St. Louis included developing a patient-centered design with an emphasis on privacy and choice.

A dynamic and refreshing space was sought that evoked a sense of style and grace. Also, a minimalist appeal was sought for the visual effect.

Beyond these high-design goals, the long-term use of materials was important, so flexibility was key in planning.

These goals required a radically different approach to planning a medical facility than is typical.

The 3,600-sq-ft virgin office space was in a corporate/medical complex in southwest suburban Chesterfield, Mo., for a newly formed plastic surgeon’s practice.

Ironically, the two-complex shell was designed by St. Louis-based Gray Design Group, also the interior designer on the Gurley project.

A ‘Zen-like’ Environment

The plan called for natural, Zen-like materials with subtle touches of crisp color to act as punctuation. Planar elements of rich and exotic wood materials were sought to evoke style and give an integrated visual effect.

In addition, sculpturally articulated elements were included in part to imbue the space with meaning for the predominantly female clientele.

A delineation of waiting spaces for pre- and post-op patients would give the facility a greater sense of comfort.

The major obstacle on the project was time. The doctor had left a large, well-established medical group and had only 16 weeks to get a new practice running without losing patients during the transition.

Jury Comments: “This place is pretty sleek. The aesthetics are nice. Patients will get a sense of the doctor-owner’s sense of style—a major consideration for a plastic surgeon.”
